Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

From the June issue of Forum

By Richard Wegman and Alan Blau, AmSoc board members

In a beautiful home in Chacara Flora, AmSoc will be hosting a family picnic for all its members to honor the traditional Independence Day outings in the United States. The day begins at noon on July 3, with lots of games, prizes, special monitored activities, rides, face-painting and more for the kids. We’ll also keep them busy with hot dogs and cake to eat, and of course ending the day with sparklers and smiles.

We also thought about the adults and family games, which could include an old-fashioned egg toss or three-legged race in order to get your blood flowing. Of course, for adults we have beers as well as sodas, hamburgers with all the fixings (even a little chili); hot dogs and chicken skewers with BBQ sauce. (more…)

540 guests attended the American Society’s 60th Anniversary Party, making it one of the largest events ever organized by AmSoc. In keeping with the diamond theme, appropriate for a 60th anniversary, it was a glittering, multi-faceted gem of a night.

Violins serenaded guests as they arrived at Buffet Torres in Moema. Elegance and style were in abundance, with men wearing black ties with dinner jackets or dark suits and the women in their best party dresses.

The evening started with cocktails and “mystery boxes” – on sale for R$50, R$100 or R$200, containing donated gifts guaranteed to be worth more than the sale price. There was also time to make bids on items for silent auction, which proved enormously popular. The items included weekends away in resorts, bicycles, pieces of art and many other items. (more…)

July 4th Party to be held on July 3rd this year

Friday, April 30th, 2010

From the May issue of Forum

This July, we’ll be celebrating the US Independence Day on Saturday, July 3, at a long-time AmSoc member’s home in Chacara Flora. Reserve this date on your calendar, and keep in mind that we’re limited to 250 guests, so you can make your reservation anytime after May 17. We’ve got some new committee members and some new and different ideas for this year’s party.

This is an event that has something for everyone: great games for the kids, live auction and raffles for the adults and a bounty of food. As in years past, each family should bring a salad or dessert to accompany the traditional hamburgers and hot dogs.

Remember, this is a Members Only event, so invite your friends to join AmSoc so they can attend one of the year’s best American events in Sao Paulo.

Maybe it’s the cooler weather. Maybe it’s watching the school year wind down. Maybe it’s good organization. Whatever it is, the Angel Party Committee has already started to plan the 2010 Angel Party, set for Nov. 6.

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

From the April issue of Forum

By Simon Tharby, staff writer

If you’ve been to one of AmSoc’s Annual General Meetings before, you’ll know that its obligatory title will never reflect the amiable charm and positivity of the event itself.

A social gathering, with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and plenty of time to enjoy the company of AmSoc members, it is far more than “just” a meeting. This AGM will also be treated as a farewell party for U.S. Consul General Tom White and his family, who’ll be leaving Sao Paulo in July after serving three years at the local U.S. Consulate.

The AGM will be on April 14. RSVP to the invitation letters you receive through the AmSoc office: (amsoc@amsoc.com.br / 5182-2074). Space is limited. Identification in the form of a passport or RNE card will be checked at the door. (more…)

What you need to know about AmSoc’s 60th Anniversary Party

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

From the April issue of Forum

The American Society of Sao Paulo’s 60th Anniversary Charity Dinner & Dance is in benefit of Vivenda da Crianca and other AmSoc partners, and will be held on Friday, May 7, at Buffet Torres Moema, Av. Dos Imares, 182. Cocktails and games with prizes will run from 7:30 to 9 pm , with dinner, dancing and an auction to follow. Dress is Black Tie optional, and the cost per person is R$200. A numbered invitation is required for entrance.

A helpful Q&A about the party

What should I wear?
Women, wear your most beautiful long or short party dress. Men, you’ll look lovely in black tie or in a dark suit. Both of you will be able to have your pictures taken upon arrival as a souvenir of the party.

Can we reserve tables?
When a whole group of people buys a table, they will be asked about where they’d like the table to be. Then, as soon as all the tables have all been sold (probably mid-April), we’ll assign spots to groups based on who reserved first. So make your reservations soon and sit in the center of the action — or near the dessert! (more…)
