AmSoc’s 60th Diamond Anniversary Dinner & Dance on May 7, Save the date!

From the March issue of Forum

The American Society of Sao Paulo is hosting a night to be remembered by all, as the grand commemoration of our Diamond Anniversary will surely shine throughout the city.

Diamonds are the theme of the party, due to it’s relation to a 60th anniversary. The entertainment will be provided by the well-known Brazilian band SP3, which will be sure to have us up on the dance floor into the wee hours of the morning with continuous contemporary and flashback music, and a DJ to keep us going during the band’s breaks.

This is an event members will not want to miss, and outside guests are also invited to join the celebration on Friday, May 7, at Buffet Torres in Moema. Cocktails begin at 7:30 pm with dinner and dancing at 9 pm.  There will be a brief live auction to benefit the new Vivenda da Crianca bakery (padaria) project and other AmSoc charity projects, like the matching charity fund and the annual Angel Party.

The intention of the Vivenda da Crianca bakery project is to be a self-sustaining small business designed to help foster skills and generate revenue in Paraisopolis to benefit greater social and economic mobility at the neighborhood level.  This type of support to charities is a hallmark of American social commitment and civic activism at home, and here through AmSoc.

This event is THE American Society fundraiser event for 2010 — so get your tickets and table of 10 reservations early!  For tickets, contact amsoc@amsoc.com.br or 5182-2074.  Tickets are R$200 per person for both members and non-members.

The party will be held at the elegant, neoclassical Buffet Torres (www.buffettorres.com.br), known for its delicious gourmet food, located on Av. do Imares, 182 in Moema. This buffet was chosen due to its very accessible central location near Shopping Ibirapuera and also its convenient parking.

When AmSoc was first organized in 1950, Brazil was experiencing booming growth and global attention, similar to today, and was seen as an emerging economic and cultural power.  Now in 2010, since the economy has weathered the worst of the world’s economic crisis and landed on its feet more quickly and stronger than most, all eyes are again on Brazil.  With The Economist’s recent cover story, and the upcoming hosting of the World Cup and the Summer Olympic Games, there is excitement in many areas for Brazil – namely in sports, business, infrastructure, world politics and culture.
President Obama will visit Brazil later this year to highlight the country’s importance and the link it shares with the United States.

The AmSoc board looked to Marlene Rubeiz, former board president, to spearhead the planning and organization for this special event. She believes, “this party will be memorable because we have chosen the prettiest place, the best band and we will also be giving back to the community.”  Rubeiz gladly accepted the task and has put together a stellar team of leaders and active participants who have been divided into several sub-committees such as fundraising, games, publicity and marketing, logistics and ticket sales.  Several meetings and lots of work have gone into the party to date and many interesting prizes have already been donated for the gift raffle boxes and silent auction, including several big prizes for the live auction, which will be brief and take place during dinner.

So mark May 7 on your calendars and get your tickets early to guarantee your spot at this sophisticated event full of fun and friends to celebrate AmSoc’s 60-year history.  Great food, spirits and music and dancing will be enjoyed by all.
